Kisinyinye Finds a Practical Way to Protect Herself
When commercial face coverings were beyond her reach, Kisinyinye improvised with what she had while waiting for safer protection.
Kisinyinye, a member of the Reto savings group in Nkoilale, met Basecamp Foundation Kenya during a relief outreach in her village. The team noticed that she had fashioned a face covering from her Maasai shuka because she could not afford a suitable reusable mask.
Her improvised solution showed both awareness of the public-health guidance and the resource constraints facing many families at the time. During the outreach, she received a washable face covering as well as food support for her household.
“I am grateful to have a comfortable washable mask and food that will help feed my family.”
Kisinyinye’s story captures the creativity and determination with which community members responded to an unfamiliar crisis—and the importance of ensuring that protective guidance is accompanied by access to practical resources.
