LIVELIHOODS

Strengthening Financial Capability and Enterprise

Basecamp Foundation Kenya supports community-driven approaches that help households save, invest, access small loans and develop sustainable sources of income.

Many rural households have limited access to formal financial services and practical business support. This can make it difficult to manage unexpected costs, invest in an enterprise or turn a promising idea into a reliable livelihood. Community Managed Savings Groups provide a locally governed platform through which members can build financial knowledge and act together.

The approach places decision-making and responsibility with group members. Regular saving, transparent group processes and access to small loans help participants—particularly women—make informed choices about household finances, start or strengthen businesses and build greater economic resilience.

COMMUNITY MANAGED SAVINGS GROUPS

A Practical Pathway to Economic Participation

CMSGs connect financial learning with collective action and opportunities for household enterprise.

Financial Literacy

Members strengthen their understanding of saving, spending, borrowing and planning so that they can make more informed financial decisions.

Regular Saving

A structured group platform encourages consistent saving and helps members build resources gradually from what they can afford.

Access to Small Loans

Group-managed lending gives members a practical source of capital for urgent needs, productive investment and business development.

Enterprise Development

Participants can use savings, loans and peer learning to start or grow micro and small businesses that generate household income.

Women’s Economic Participation

The model creates space for women to strengthen financial agency, pursue livelihood opportunities and contribute to household decisions.

Household Resilience

Greater financial capability and more diverse income sources help families prepare for challenges and invest in longer-term wellbeing.

SOCIAL FRANCHISING

Enterprise That Expands Access to Practical Solutions

The Social Franchising Project is an enterprise model within the Community Managed Savings Group approach. It works through village agents who distribute renewable and resource-efficient products within their communities.

By connecting local enterprise with useful household products, the model creates a potential income pathway for agents while improving community access to efficient cooking stoves, solar-energy units and water filters.
