GIRLS & WOMEN

Building Agency, Opportunity and Support

Basecamp Foundation Kenya supports adolescent girls and young women to build knowledge, confidence and practical pathways towards greater social and economic participation.

Girls and young mothers may leave formal education early because of pregnancy, early marriage, limited support or other social and economic barriers. These experiences should not define the rest of their lives. With relevant skills, supportive relationships and opportunities to participate, young women can reshape their futures and contribute more fully to their families and communities.

Our work centres on the Bonga Adolescent Girls Empowerment Programme, a structured learning and support model that helps participants strengthen personal agency, understand their rights, improve financial capability and explore livelihood opportunities.

THE BONGA PROGRAMME

Skills for Life, Voice and Livelihoods

The programme combines personal development with practical knowledge that participants can apply in their households, enterprises and communities.

Personal Development

Participants reflect on their strengths, goals and choices while building the confidence to make informed decisions about their futures.

Rights and Inclusion

Learning about basic human rights strengthens awareness, voice and the ability to seek support and participate in community life.

Financial Literacy

Participants develop practical understanding of saving, managing money and making more informed household and livelihood decisions.

Entrepreneurship

Business skills and exposure to income-generating activities help young women identify realistic opportunities for greater economic independence.

Peer Support

Participants learn in supportive groups where they can share experiences, discuss challenges and encourage one another’s progress.

Community Participation

Greater knowledge, confidence and economic capability enable graduates to contribute more actively within their households and communities.

BONGA FORUMS

Networks That Sustain Progress

After completing the six-month programme, participants receive certificates and are encouraged to join Bonga Forums. These graduate-led support networks provide an ongoing platform for exchanging good practices, developing business skills, participating in table banking and pursuing income-generating activities.

Forum members can also collaborate on joint investments, turning peer connection into practical economic and community action. This continuing structure helps sustain learning and enables women to grow together beyond the formal training period.
