Mara Girls Leadership School (MGLS) is a model institution of excellence established in 2017 by Basecamp Foundation Kenya. The school's mission is to provide quality education to talented and promising girls from the Maasai Community, drawn within the Narok West Sub County, Narok County. True to its name, the school aims to empower girls with the education and tools necessary to thrive and become leaders who can drive positive change in their communities through the transformative power of education.
In the previous education system, the 8-4-4 curriculum, which ran in the school from 2017 to 2023, the school operated three classes: six, seven and eight, with each class accomondating a maximum of 16 girls, and a total school population of 48. However, with the transition to the 2-6-3-3-3 system/Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), the school has now evolved from a upper primary school to a Junior Secondary School (JSS), with three Grades: seven, eight and nine. Each class comprises of 24 girls, and as of January 2025, upon the admission of all JSS classes, the school now hosts 72 girls - a record number since its inception.
The school promotes holistic learner growth by providing quality teaching staff and adequate learning materials to foster academic excellence. The school places a strong emphasis on extracurricular activities including music/drama, games/sports, art, and public speaking. Historically, the students have excelled in competitive extracurricular activities. Additionally, the school focuses on spiritual growth through a structured pastoral program. The girls also receive timely mentorship, counselling and guidance to ensure that they remain focussed while navigating the challenges and distractions of their teenage years.
Since its establishment, MGLS has successfully transitioned 79 girls to various high schools across the country. These students are actively tracked and monitored through a robust Alumni Association program which apart from connecting them online through a WhatsApp group, allows them to meet annually, exchange ideas and check on each other. With the current population of 72, it brings the total number of girls to 151 - current and alumni. The vision of the founders is to nurture and support at least 1000 change makers. While there is still much, the light ahead offers hope and reassurance. It is a journey only possible through strategic partnerships.
The school is largely funded by Strømme Foundation - with Å and Skagerak Energy Companies as back donors, Swedish and Norwegian families: Nordtug, Sällström, Lanner, Hans and Anita Lundström.
